Spring break is coming up and there’s no better time to explore Kona, Hawaii than late March and early April. Most of the United States still hasn’t quite warmed up from the winter months, so escaping to the tropical islands of Hawaii for a week is a great way to get warmed up while relaxing on the beach.

Kona, which is located on Hawaii’s Big Island, is home to many incredible experiences as well as some of the most delicious coffee in the world. Let us help you find some amazing things to do in Kona, Hawaii this spring.

Spring Happenings in Kona, Hawaii 2023

Hawaii is known for being warm and sunny almost all year round, but during the winter months some activities and experiences do shut down for the holiday season. As we move into March many of these experiences begin to open back up and are a great way to experience all the island has to offer.

1. Hiking, Snorkeling, and other Outdoor Activities

The one thing that everyone wants to do when they visit Hawaii is spend as much time outdoors as they possibly can. The area around Kona on The Big Island offers a number of amazing hiking trails, snorkeling spots, scuba diving experiences, and more.

Kealakekua Bay Historical Park is the place to be if you want to get a glimpse into the marine life around the island. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayak tours are all available to you. Whether you’re experienced in the water or just want to try something different check out Kealakekua Bay.

In and around the Kona area you’ll also find some great hiking trails with some beautiful water falls to explore.

2. Tour a Working Coffee Farm

Of course, we’re a little bias about this one but seeing the inner workings of a working coffee farm is a great way to help you understand where your coffee comes from. It also shows you the pride we take in our coffee from the planting of the crops and harvesting, to the drying and roasting processes.

There are many small coffee farms in the Kona area, and we would love to have you as our guests to experience the farm and taste the incredible 100% Kona coffee that we produce here.

3. Visit the Kona Brewing Company

If beer is more your style, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Kona Brewing Company. Kona Brewing Company has been a staple of Kona for over 25 years. There are two different tap rooms located on Oahu (The Big Island) with the main one located in Kailua-Kona next to the brewery. They offer brewery tours multiple times a day that will take you through the brewery and also let you try 4 different samples of their beers.

If you’re a beer lover visiting Hawaii, then this is definitely something you’ll want to check out even if you don’t want to take the tour.

4. Merrie Monarch Festival

For the entire week of April 9th-15th you can experience one of the most popular festivals on the island, the Merrie Monarch Festival. This year is the 60th anniversary of the festival which features hula performances from a number of different dance groups as well as a Miss Aloha Hula competition. This festival is designed to celebrate Hawaiian culture in addition to an incredible hula competition.

You’ll also get to experience an invitation art fair and a parade that showcases Hawaiian culture. This is a unique festival that you will only get to experience in Kona during the spring.

5. Big Island Art Fair

The Big Island Art Fair runs from March 23rd – 25th and features local artists with incredible artwork for sale. There are also classes that can help bring out your artistic side. These classes can help you learn new painting techniques or just gain a better understanding of the business of art.

If you’re an artist and will be on the island in March, this is a great opportunity to get a look into the art and artists coming out of Hawaii. There are also social events like the Mimosa Mingle and Artist Challenges that encourage everyone to get involved and learn new things.

Kona in the Spring

Kona, Hawaii is a great place to spend your spring break whether that’s just to get away from the cold back at home or to enjoy some relaxing time with your family. There are always plenty of events and excursions to experience while on The Big Island. Between hiking, water activities, art fairs, food and drink, there’s always something new to experience.
